
Sieve analysis is one of the available methods for assessing the particle size distribution (PSD) or grain size distribution of granular or powdered material. Performance of the material during the process critically depends on the size distribution and hence the particle size distribution is an important concern. This method is used for all type of non-organic or organic round granular materials which include pharmaceutical powdered ingredients, sands, coal, soil and other powdered materials. This method is also used for grain and seeds.
Sieves with wire mesh cloth in a nested column placed on the mechanical shaker are used for sieve analysis. The material is weighed and poured into the top most sieves having the widest openings. The openings or the mesh size gets smaller at each lower sieve compared to the above one. The pan which is also known as receiver is placed at the base to collect the finest granules of the material.

The mechanical shaker or sieve shaker shakes the column of test sieves at desired intensity. The intensity of vibration could be adjusted by changing the speed of main drive unit.
